A thread that documents that gradual but consistent demise of the New York Mets. LATEST NEWS: Sox Drawer: The Truth About J.J. PutzWhen the trade went down last year, I never really had a physical with the Mets,” said Putz. “I had the bone spur (in the right elbow). It was discovered the previous year in Seattle, and it never got checked out by any other doctors until I got to spring training, and the spring training physical is kind of a formality. It was bugging me all through April, and in May I got an injection. It just got to the point where I couldn’t pitch. I couldn’t throw strikes, my velocity was way down.” Woodlands Man Sues After Former Major-Leaguer (Allegedly) Assaults HimA former relief pitcher for the Chicago White Sox and New York Mets has been sued for allegedly assaulting a Woodlands man during a New Year's Eve party in Dallas.
Randy Sorrels, attorney for 25-year-old Ivan Pinney, said his client's left eye was severely damaged when he was punched and kicked by Lance Broadway, currently a minor-league pitcher in the Toronto Blue Jays organization, and Cameron McGuire, who plays for United League Baseball's Edinburg Roadrunners. Carlos Beltran said New York Mets GM Omar Minaya knew about knee surgery in advanceWith assistant GM John Ricco standing in as front man for the organization, the Mets put the onus squarely on Carlos Beltran and agent Scott Boras for ignoring protocol and a direct request from the team to wait for additional medical opinions before the star center fielder underwent arthroscopic surgery Wednesday on his problematic right knee.
...
"We're disappointed that the proper process wasn't followed," Ricco said. "We told the agent for the player that we wanted to have the ability to discuss the diagnosis and possibly have a third opinion because of the nature of this injury.
"We thought we had cooperation from their side. And to find out afterward that the surgery occurred, that's where we're most upset."
...
According to Boras, Dr. Steadman received workman's compensation paperwork for payment purposes from Mets trainer Ray Ramirez and he also obtained verbal consent from team doctor David Altchek following Beltran's Tuesday examination.
"Our office has gone out of its way to cooperate with the Mets," Boras said. "It's hard for me to believe that a world-renowned knee surgeon operating on a world-class, highly paid athlete would operate on him without the team's consent."
In a statement relased by Boras, Beltran also reiterated that he spoke to Minaya on Tuesday, saying, "He did not ask me to wait. He just wished me well....Any accusations I ignored or defied the team's wishes are simply false." It's going to be a fun season.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes that Carlos Beltran (knee) is furious with the Mets. Sherman writes that Beltran wonders if he should have played at all last season and therefore doesn't expect him to prioritize the team this time around. How he knows exactly what is going on in Beltran's head is anybody's guess, but the Mets will have to get by with Angel Pagan and Gary Matthews Jr. in center field for at least a little while.

For all the mediocrity and injuries and dumb moves I've had to deal with as a Braves fan the past few years, I can always take solace in the fact that in the end they are not and never will be as fucking retarded as the Metropolitans.

While trying to ramp up his workouts in preparation for reporting to the Mets this week, reliever Kelvim Escobar felt a twinge in his shoulder.

Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News reports that the Mets are trying to void their waiver claim on Jay Marshall because the left-hander had a preexisting shoulder injury.

Francisco Rodriguez has been diagnosed with pink eye. The Mets' closer has been walking around camp with a bloodshot eye in recent days. He's been told to stay away from the team as he recuperates from the highly-contagious condition.

Mets general manager Omar Minaya said that Jose Reyes does have an overactive thyroid. Here we go again. According to Minaya, Reyes was mistaken in his comments to Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes. The Mets GM spoke with Reyes' agent and the doctor today to make sure everyone was on the same page regarding the diagnosis. Reyes is still awaiting results of another test. You'd think they would have hashed this out before releasing information to the media, but however you slice it, Reyes remains sidelined indefinitely.

The Mets said it will be approximately two to eight weeks before Jose Reyes resumes baseball activity. It's a pretty large window, but Mets general manager Omar Minaya isn't optimistic about Reyes being ready for the start of the season. The current plan is for Reyes plan to rest, refrain from athletic activity and make changes in his diet in order to reach normal thyroid levels. Be sure to closely monitor his progress as your draft day approaches. It may take some time for him to get into game shape even after his levels return to normal. It's a really tough blow for the Metropolitans.

Daniel Murphy (knee) will miss 2-6 weeks with a Grade 1 sprain of his right MCL. Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Mets' plan is for Jose Reyes to miss Opening Day, but possibly join the club for the fifth game of the season against the Nationals. If the Mets backdate Reyes, he would be eligible to return from the disabled list on March 10, the fifth game of the season. It's disappointing that he won't be on the lineup card for Opening Day, but Reyes has yet to play without restrictions in minor league games. It's not worth risking his long-term health if he's not in proper game-shape. Alex Cora will start in the meantime.

John Maine was hammered for eight runs over three innings in an 11-3 loss to the Rockies on Tuesday night. Pathetic. Maine touched 91 mph on the radar gun, however he had absolutely no life on his pitches. The worst of it was in the third inning, when he gave up six runs, all with two outs. Maine has a bloated 13.50 ERA and 2.38 WHIP over his first two starts Mets manager Jerry Manuel suggested that John Maine's rotation spot could be in jeopardy after he gave up eight runs over just three innings against the Rockies on Tuesday.

Livan Hernandez tossed a complete-game shutout in an 8-0 win over the Brewers on Saturday afternoon. Hernandez held the Brewers to just four hits and didn't allow a hit after the fifth inning. He has 16 scoreless innings under his belt to begin the season. It was his first complete game since last May 26 as a member of the Mets against the Nationals. With the win, the Nationals are over .500 for the first time since April of 2007. And to think they passed on pinero.

Oliver Perez was yanked after allowing three runs over 3 2/3 innings against the Dodgers on Tuesday night. Mets manager Jerry Manuel had about enough after Perez walked opposing pitcher Charlie Haeger on four pitches to load the bases. Perez threw just 37 of 75 pitches for strikes, while walking four and striking out two

David Wright was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the ninth inning of Sunday's game. After striking out for the fourth time of the game, Wright turned to jaw with umpire Paul Schrieber and was quickly given the hook. He's now struck out in eight consecutive at-bats.

Uh oh. Trouble afoot. John Maine criticized Mets manager Jerry Manuel for removing him from Thursday's game against the Nationals after just five pitches. "There’s no reason I should be seeing a (expletive) doctor tomorrow," said Maine, who was removed for diminished velocity and poor mechanics. "I feel something all the time. We’re pitchers. Every pitcher does." Maine claims that he did not feel any pain on the mound, but Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen called Maine "a habitual liar in a lot of ways as far as his own health." We have no way of knowing if that is true, but even if it is, Warthen should have chosen his words more carefully. The relationship between all involved may be permanently strained.
