Locke may be dead, buy he is coming back to life. That little girl came back to life in '?'. Also, when Richard visits John as a boy, Richard asks Locke to pick out which objects are his. He picks the compass, the one he gave him when he went back in time. He also picks a vial of ash or dust. Richard doesn't say anything until he picks the knife, which appears to be Keamy's knife. Taking this to mean the the vial of sand is in fact John's, he must still be alive later in order for it to become his.
Of course, they may think that John is the reincarnation of someone and that the vial of sand belongs to whoever they think he was in a past life. But I don't like that, so we can rule it out as a possibility.

This seems like the first time anyone's ever addressed time on the island, like actual time passed not "we have to find where, no, when are we..." time. Hearing Mac say the french chick had been dead for years, or to say that a few years back Kate hit him in the face seemed more matter-of-fact than this show usually is (same with the Japanese Dude just saying "your sister" to Jack).

Yeah but isn't it implied that the rest of them aren't either or am I missing Kate explicitly being told she isn't on the list? Plus it could just be we haven't seen her name... maybe later some dramatic close up to her name already crossed off.
