Sandra Bullock's feel-good football movie "The Blind Side" is making history!
According to Variety, the Bullock hit movie is the first film with a female lead to surpass the $200 million mark at the box office. Over the weekend, it reached a whopping $208.5 million.
Until "The Blind Side," the Julia Roberts drama "Erin Brockovich," was the highest grossing movie in the category, making $125.6 million. |

Well I was completely avoiding the movie until I was watching college football and I saw some of the coaches featured. I mean, shit, Nick Saban in a cameo role? Lou motherfuckin' Holtz? Sign me up! I got 8 of my football buddies together to go see it and we took up a whole 10-seat row (you'll see why soon); right at the critical scene between Bullock and Quinton Aaron in the laundromat, where Michael confirms his dreams and Leigh Anne has to let go, we all stood up and took our shirts off to reveal "BLIND SIDE" on our chests (we left one seat open for the space; I was "D"). The whole audience, mostly 18-34 males, went "hoot hoot hoot" in unison as Michael was successfully drafted and Leigh Anne reflected on what she had done for him. It was a good show. |

I can tell that Joe, living in Buffalo, NY, a barren wasteland that doesn't give a shit about college football, thinks what I am saying is ridiculous
I personally know several people who went to see The Blind Side completely because of the SEC coaches. I am completely serious. There was a 0% chance of seeing this movie without them. There was a 75% chance of them seeing the movie when they saw all those cameos. Plus they easily knew about the movie at least two months beforehand because of all the ads during the programming. I remember thinking to myself, this movie isn't out yet? In other words, yes, they are big enough fans of college football as to go to this Sandra Bullock feel-good movie solely for the cameos.
I wish there was some way to prove this but there simply isn't. I'm just a little baffled that you don't think this has happened with other inspirational sports movies. It's just demographics. I'm not saying that everyone who saw The Blind Side did the same thing or even that most did. But I think it's silly to say that it had zero effect, especially when the commercials ruled ESPN for months (way before the movie came out and viewers were unusually inundated with THIS movie because of its obvious appeal to the viewing demographic).
This happens with a lot of movies. Advertising targets specific viewers. It's nothing new. But I think this movie is unique in that I truly think the cameos of the coaches had a tangible positive effect on viewership. Just about every SEC school in this movie was represented, which leads to a lot of student bodies/fans throughout all the states in the South thinking about seeing someone who either is or used to be affiliated with their school as an actor, which doesn't exactly happen too often.
Besides, otherwise, I fail to see what makes this movie so special as to make so much money. Even if it is about football, Sandra Bullock isn't the biggest star.
I mean what the fuck. Why is this so absurd?

I think Bullock registers as a notable star. Inspirational sports movie are indeed a subgenre which can do well. As mentioned it got good word of mouth, and it was the right time for a cookie cutter family friendly tale. Also I think this kinda stuff does better when there's a big blockbuster out (didn't Mamma Mia do well in part because The Dark Knight was out?). That one's a bit more out there. |
