Dear everyone: The following movies were boring and massively overrated.
  • 8 Mile
  • There Will Be Blood
  • Lost in Translation

More as I think of them.

  • Ghost World
  • Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

Lost in Translation should have lead to Sofia Coppola being shot

There Will Be Blood was awesome but not as good as No Country for Old Men, no matter what anyone says

8 Mile wasn't that bad

I really don't see Lost in Translation as ...overrated? It's a very good, simple movie with a decent enough premise and isn't too high-concept and is pretty much entirely character driven. The only thing that always throws me off when people talk about it is that they justify some sort of potential career for Ana Feris based on it ignoring that everything she's done ever besides it has been shit.

How is LiT considered overrated considering it has slipped from the public conscience? When it first came out, yeah, but not now.

Eternal Sunshine strikes me as being overrated.

Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind was about forty times fucking better than Lost in Translation.

Lost in Translation was pretty much Garden State for old people.

Am I the only one who still unironically loves both Lost in Translation and Eternal Sunshine? For what it's worth, I think the tone and even the themes of both are so similar and sentimental that I don't really understand liking one and not liking another, unless you are one of those people who didn't like the pacing. And if you don't like the pacing of Coppola movies, I would suggest not venturing into too much indie or foreign then because I've seen much slower. Definitely don't try Gus Van Sant or Ingmar Bergman.

And c'mon Lost in Translation was way better than Garden State.

Garden State wasn't just not good it was bad.

I don't mind the pace of Lost in Translation it just didn't seem like that much was there underneath despite both main actors turning in a good performance and it being decent enough in general

just saying is all

Why the fuck do you group 8 Mile with fucking Lost in Translation and There Will Be Blood?!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8_Mile_(film)#Reception

Quote
8 Mile was generally well received among critics. The film currently holds a 74% "Certified Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Ebert and Roeper gave the film a "two thumbs up" rating. The film was a surprise hit at the box office opening at #1, making $19,574,765 on its opening day and $51,240,555 over its first three days from only 2,470 theaters for an average of $20,745 per venue, making it one of the biggest opening weekends for an R-rated movie as well being as the biggest opening for a movie released in less than 2,500 theaters. The film made a total of $242,875,078 worldwide ($116,750,901 domestically, and $126,124,177 internationally).

I saw 8 Mile in a theater with my college roomies, and it was so horrible I wanted to walk out on it - ended up staying after I couldn't talk anyone else into doing so. When I found out later how well it had done and had been received by critics, I was flabbergasted.

TWBB made $75.7 million worldwide.

Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind was about forty times fucking better than Lost in Translation.

IAWTC. I don't see them as similar at all, really. Eternal Sunshine had a plot, for one thing. That being said, I think I would stop short of calling it "good."

Nothing about the money; just making the point that it was less fiscally successful than 8 Mile. And though I didn't particularly like it, I'd have to say TWBB was the better movie by far.

Lost in Translation is a great movie. I have its movie poster on my wall.

Brak what did you think of The Virgin Suicides and/or Marie Antoinette? I only saw Marie once and liked it, but god, that pacing was way slower than Lost in Translation. At least that's what it FELT like.

Since albright doesn't like either of these movies, I would like sort of a barometer of what you consider good Albright. Please stop short of posting animation, not because it's not valid but because we could guess you might like it and rattling off Spirited Away and a few Pixars would still leave us largely in the dark.

For me, Garden State was one of those movies that got worse the more you saw it. I feel the same way about Zach Braff in general, actually.

TWBB is such a great movie. Not as good as No Country for Old Men, but still great. I'll admit that you have to commit to spending your afternoon watching it. It is a long one. But, like, man it is so worth it.

I didn't know 8 Mile was loved by critics or made money either. Eminem was pretty big when it came out right, so I guess that's not too hard to imagine.

Marie Antoinette sucked, it looked pretty but it was awful.

Virgin Suicides is her most tolerable but even then it's not particularly special.

I'll give her she has an eye for nice visuals but everything else is crap and Lost in Translation is the crappiest piece of crap she's made.

And god damn it, 8 Miles WAS NOT THAT BAD, I went in with low expectations and was surprised at how solid it was.

Garden State is better than Lost in Translation because they're the exact same god damn thing, but at least Garden State attempted to be humorous. Lost in Translation was pointless AND unfunny. Great.

The Taste of Tea
Hana
Mom and Dad Save the World (really?)

I didn't like Marie Antoinette the first time I watched it.

But the second time, I felt it was simply an extension of Lost in Translation and an excellent film.

She's the master of mood. In Lost in Tanslation, she captures the essence of that expression, the complete out of sorts when stranded without friends of anyone you can communicate with. Marie Antoinette begins with a similar out of sortsness, her being the Russian Princess married off to a Franc, but as she becomes this overly debutantish girl, it fades from complete unfamiliarity to an almost over-familiarity. Marie Antoinette doesn't just capture a mood, it captures an entire panoply of moods all the way through to the tragic ending.
