week of renting movies just because of actor(s)

Gamer 2.5/5 -- Every second of Michael C. Hall on screen was glorious, especially the ending fight scene. He got real goofy there. But way too much of the typical action hero of few words (Gerard Butler) trying to save damsels in distress nonsense otherwise. Also plenty of technological gobbledly gook bandied about. Oh and I guess this was fitting that it took place in the year 2034 because it's probably the 2,034th movie to have the theme of future world where nobody cares if people die.

Night at the Museum II 2/5 -- Similar to Gamer in that Amy Adams was pretty great but the overall product was not very good. What is it with these kinds of movies where the climax scene just keeps going and going? Hank Azaria wasn't terrible as the villain but his lines were hit or miss. Too much Owen Wilson and too little Steve Coogan and Ricky Gervais, IMHO.

Really? I mean, like, really? You saw Gamer because of Michael C. Hall?

Clearly you've never seen Six Feet Under or Dexter. You do not understand why anyone would be a fan of Michael C. Hall. It was an easy decision for me, and his scenes made it worth the rental. Renting Night at the Museum 2 was definitely the bigger stretch.

Plus Michael C. Hall has done very little outside of those two TV shows, so I was interested to see him in other roles.

Did I do something to piss off sl4 that I forgot? The other people, I get, but sl4 is like a rattled beehive lately. Posting in a film thread about films offends him even.

Well don't get me wrong it's bad but you need to look up his final scenes with Gerard Butler on Youtube, especially his dance. It's pretty great.

Wow I haven't been here for awhile. BEEN RENTING VERONICA MARS / WATCHING SPORTS NIGHT.

Cold Souls 3/5 -- Interesting premise but ultimately much too slow. Felt like the premise could have went farther/been more interesting too.

An Education 4/5 -- I'm a sucker for these type of movies and I'm sure a lot of people who regularly post here will not enjoy this in the same vein as stuff like The Reader and Atonement, but I thought it was very good. Despite having a pretty pedestrian plot, the acting was top notch.

A Serious Man 4.5/5 -- While not as strong as the last two Coens movies (No Country for Old Men and Burn After Reading), those were both five-star films. The acting of the lead performer was phenomenal IMO and I haven't seen better so far from 2009 movies. I'd even rank him above Sam Rockwell in Moon (rewatched that recently and yes still 5/5 movie). All the parallels to the story of Job are obvious, but I also love the concept. And I freaking LOVED the ending. I feel like the Coens are in a new golden age or something for them.

The Fantastic Mr. Fox 5/5 -- Pretty great. It's weird -- Jason Schwartzman is usually pretty one-note lately, but he was actually the highlight of this movie, with George Clooney in a very close second. The writing from Baumbach and Andersen was top-notch, and I legitimately think this is one of the best films of 2009.

Zombieland 4/5 -- Good stuff. Jesse Eisenberg was Jesse Eisenberg, and Woody Harrelson was Woody Harrelson. And that was great. I guess I can see where Joe is coming from in the sense that this premise has been done and it was pretty by the books. But at the same time, it was well-executed and quirky and I'm fine with that stuff.

Black Dynamite 4/5 -- Funny stuff in the vein of something like Grindhouse. It's a parody of blaxplotation movies, and it's pretty hilarious. Only problem is that the gags get a little fewer and far between in the second half of the movie (with the exception of one scene involving multiple non sequiturs which is the highlight). Definitely worth seeing.

The September Issue 3/5 -- I really only saw this because I'm interested in the magazine industry and not fashion. As an aspiring writer, it was a bit depressing but expected to see just how much Vogue emphasizes design and photography over writing. Like maybe one minute was devoted to writing in the film whereas everything else was spent agonizing over design and photography. And plus Vogue is a magazine that is a whore for pages and pages of ads. It was interesting to see the interworkings of a magazine but annoying to see the interworkings of this type of magazine I guess. Plus the documentary itself got scatterbrained from time to time with no overarching narrative outside of the putting together of this issue (which at times was not even clear when decisions were made or what the timeline was.)

Jennifer's Body 2/5 -- You know the "honest-to-blog" comment from Juno that made everyone get pissed at Diablo Cody? Well the line in this one is "MoveOn.org" when Megan Fox is telling Amanda Seyfried to move on. There are a few lines like that, enough to make you easily think that Cody's script for this was decidedly weaker than Juno's, even if you didn't like that one either. Halfway through, I wondered if I saw this in 2029, would I think it was simply this generation's Heathers and enjoy it, accepting all its campiness? I'm not sure, but in 2010, I thought it was not very good at all and had plotholes and the beginning and ending are the worst parts.

It was different but acceptable. I don't really think they were going for the typical Pixar/Dreamworks-type animation. I don't pretend to understand it, but I think it was looking to be more stylized.

Then again maybe they just spent all the money on the cast. The movie did have george clooney, meryl streep, jason schwartzman and owen wilson.

Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire 4/5 -- I realize this is essentially the first entry in the Oprah Movie Club. And there's a lot of things about the way this was presented to the movie world that are kind of annoying, like how Oprah and Tyler Perry, two media figures nobody really likes, championed this. But it really is a good, deeply emotional movie, mostly for the scenes between Precious and her mother. It also helps when the ending scene is the very best part of the movie. Unintentional comedy as well with lines like "You think you is too good for the welfare?"

The Informant! 4/5 -- I really like Soderbergh and I really like Damon and this was good. But I don't know, the trailers made it seem like a laugh riot, and it wasn't that. It was funny, yes, but it was more just interesting seeing Damon squirm and hearing his quirky, eccentric thoughts. I wish that more time had been spent focusing on Damon as a character, perhaps even at the expense of the technical, legal plot at the center of the movie.

The Men Who Stare at Goats 3.5/5 -- Another movie that was merely pretty good, but not something I'd strongly recommend. That has got to be disappointing for a comedy with George Clooney and Jeff Bridges in my book. Clooney had some great bits, particularly when he's doing that goofy stare that he does when trying to mind alter things. It reminded me of some of his ridiculous expressions in the hilarious Burn After Reading. The entire concept of a New Age army was pretty funny in execution too, and having Kevin Spacey as the foil to that makes sense with what he's done in the past. But there was just something missing. There weren't scenes full of hilarity per se, and since Ewan McGregor was both the lead character and the straight man, we spent more time with him at the expense of possible more time with the funnier characters. Still worth seeing, I guess, but there's better from 2009.

Couples Retreat 2.5/5 -- It's pretty much what you would expect. A relationships movie where everything resolves itself in the end. I don't think I'm giving away anything unpredictable with that. I only rented this because there were a lot of people I liked in it (Jason Bateman, Kristen Bell, Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau). This essentially added up to a movie that, as a whole, was not memorable, but it was better than it would have been with a less capable cast. Still a lot of stuff felt flat, and it's probably not worth renting.
