District 9 4.5/5 -- Great movie. I wasn't expecting it to be a mock documentary for half of it, and the lead turned in a very complex performance, both working early on as a likeable but bumbling hero and then later as the action hero you root for in the "us vs. the world" scenario. I would only count off for having a climax that seemed to go on and on, but there were also quite a few plot elements to wrap up in this one. It felt like a puzzle with a bunch of scattered pieces that each affected each other.
I am renting Veronica Mars so I didn't rent any other new releases this week, fellas. Sorry.

I liked it a lot but then I really hated the ending...it didn't seem to have any use or meaning besides to echo the any day could be your last narration towards the beginning, I appreciate the irony of the suicidal man deciding against it then dying anyway... but it seemed like a really hopelessly bleak way of ending. He lets go of the past and dies? Meh.

Yeah I thought the same thing. Also sometimes it was a bit too...consciously arty or whatever, a few shots stood out for no reason other than standing out.
I also like that even though it was a gay movie (and yeah it was pretty gay) it wasn't just a gay movie and worked on a few more levels

Moon 5/5 -- new current favorite movie of 2009, sam rockwell deserves, well, something
The Marc Pease Experience 3/5 -- anna kendrick was given a shitty role here for no damn reason, just made me want to watch Rocket Science again, then again actually Ben Stiller was surprisingly decent too
Soul Power 2/5 -- So the trailer says there's a controversy about putting this concert on and there ends up being freaking no damn controversy and over half the movie is just watching the concert. Don't waste your time.

District 9 -  Good story, but I think it would have been more accessible if they toned down the gorey violence. Do we really need to see a guy getting turned into little chunks of gore which splatter all over the camera twenty times? Also, I remember that they marketed this as sci-fi, but it strikes me as more of a drama with action-y bits. I guess it was more marketable as sci-fi, though. |

Probably why it was good instead of sucking I saw Whip It and I rate it 4/5. I really expected it to be one of the best movies of the year for me and it was a little too cliche for that but the acting was still really good all around. |

The Hurt Locker 4/5 -- Good but I probably wouldn't put it in my top 20. I feel like Iraq War relevancy is what this thing is riding to the top this year. But there are still good parts about it. I wish Guy Pearce and Ralph Fiennes were in it more, but I guess it was probably their schedules that dictated that or maybe just the shock of seeing a name leave the movie quickly ... twice. Shaky cam has got to stop as a "cool" film technique because it's not too cool, it's really cliche, and it just gives you a damn headache when it's used as much as it was at points here.
Public Enemies 3.5/5 -- I know it was a Michael Mann movie so I guess I shouldn't be surprised but there was a disappointing amount of action in this movie. And all the action scenes were really long, really unbelievable and they just kept getting more frequent as the movie went along. The best part of the movie (besides whenever Christian Bale talked with that goofy but believable accent) was the stuff with Marion Cotillard and Johnny Depp. So of course, after the first 30 minutes, Cotillard is barely in it. It's got to be labeled as a disappointment with the cast it had, but it's still worth watching. Just definitely not worth watching again.
