Asked if he thought it was a good investment to spend so much of his own money in a two-way Democratic primary to run against a popular Republican with millions in campaign cash, Greene replied: “Rather than just save the $10,000 and just go and buy gasoline with it, just take [it] and just be unemployed for [an] even longer period of time, I mean, that wouldn’t make any sense, um, just, um, but, uh, yes, uh … lowering these gas prices … that will create jobs, too. Anything that will lower the gasoline prices. Offshore drilling, the energy package, all that.”

I thought it was going to be those kind of movies where it's so bad it's good... Plus I had a free ticket from some dumb local promotion deal. I've started to realise that if there are free tickets to any movie at any time being given away by the handfuls, The movie most likely sucks a fat one.

I just finished rereading it and I'm uber pumped. Here's hoping it's better than "The Wachowskis Confuse V for Vendetta with 1984 and Other Futuristic Cliches." Either way, Alan Moore still hates film.

Watchmen 4/5 -- This movie is looong but its good and is surprisingly faithful, though I don't see why you seem to make a point to be faithful throughout (even leaving in mostly inconsequential bits) and then tweak things like crazy with the ending. But that doesn't matter. I liked the visuals. I liked the use of '80s music throughout, especially two riders approaching. I liked all the dialogue that was pulled directly from the source material. And the acting was pretty solid. Unfortunately, there's so much back story that this movie might be too ambitious to try to pack it all in, even in an almost 3-hour behemoth. You definitely get more out of the movie if you've read Watchmen before. While I don't think it's senseless if you've never read it, there might be some confusion in all the timeline jumping back and forth.

Watchmen: 5/5. I really couldn't have hoped for a better or more reverent adaptation. The new ending was fine and Ozy's big plan was pretty much the same, he just carried it out in a less outrageous way, so - dare I say it - I think it's actually better than the way they did it in the comic. No complaints immediately come to mind. This film had excellent casting choices and great acting. Christian Bale could learn a thing or two from Jackie Earl Haley when it comes to pulling off a convincing raspy voice, and Billy Crudup turned out to be a really good choice for Dr. Manhattan. The fight scenes were few and far between, but I felt they were very well-choreographed. I loved all the little details and easter eggs, and I really want to watch this again. I thought the length was acceptable, and I think the director's cut could potentially be way too long, but we'll see. You can't include everything, but I think the writers made good choices on what to cut. The opening montage was very effective at condensing some of the backstory and presenting it to the viewers at the beginning.
FYI CK, All Along the Watchtower is not 80's music (but it is awesome). I agree that the music choices were excellent.

SPOILERS
I think the two major cuts (the comic book story within a story and the guy at the newspaper stand) were the most obvious cuts to make. So I definitely agree there.
I actually would defend the comic book Ozy plan simply because it seems like a more traditional fear of the American public (fear of alien attack). Just like cancer scare seemed like. And just like it was believable that Dr. Manhattan would immediately be called Superman. I just felt like all the reactions of the general public in Watchmen were very believable, and Ozy's big plan fit along with it. I don't know, the new one is fine, but I also feel like Dr. Manhattan would be more detached from the situation if it was the old one. But like I said, I don't think it changes things much at all.
Also another nitpick -- they added Nixon stuff in this and I thought it was needless, corny and a bad choice because their Nixon sucked and looked awful. They should have stuck with all the news programs playing simultaneously and him shouting at the end "I DID IT!" That would have been way more powerful than that bland news conference.
Oh and I thought they should have been more subtle about Silk Spectre's father. They beat you over the freaking head with it from the very beginning.

You're right, that wasn't a very good Nixon. And yes, the TV screen newscasts were definitely superior to the Nixon speech, but it might have been tricky to do all that simultaneous dialogue in a movie...

4.5/5 Nixon's nose was of Jewproportions, and I'd rather Dr. Manhattan retained the "nothing ever ends" line himself, but everything else was very good and refreshingly faithful. I also think the opening credit sequence is one of the most creative and memorable in recent memory.

Here's the question, which seems to be the general point of most reviews, is it anything more than just a faithful adaptation?

Watchmen - The music was jarring and out of place in the beginning. The casting of Ozy didn't work well for me. I didn't care for the new Silk Spectre. And it was way too long for a movie. It should've been a mini-series instead. Definitely entertaining and definitely fun, but an instant classic it was not.

I thought Ozy and Dr. Manhattan were the strengths
The Silk Spectre was kind of not convincing when she was talking with Dr. Manhattan. The scene with multiple Dr. Manhattans stands out. I thought she should have been freaked out but she came off as just annoyed. But that's also on direction.
