I used to think he was tremendously underrated, but besides Rescue Dawn, none of his recent performances have been all that great. Harsh Times was a good enough performance to make the film bearable, but he brought nothing to Batman Begins or 3:10 to Yuma.

I thought if Bale didn't do 3:10 to Yuma, that movie is okay at best. He makes it good.
Everything Bale does is fantastic.

I think Bale's best raw performance is in the Prestige. I haven't yet seen 3:10 or Rescue Dawn.
His voice is distinctive too, so that's also cool.

He brings a different vocal interpretation to like every movie. He has a different voice in each of these movies: Batman Begins, The New World, The Prestige, Harsh Times, Rescue Dawn, 3:10 to Yuma

He was good in The Prestige. Too bad Hugh Jackman sucks.
I completely forgot about him in The New World.
Russell Crowe made 3:10 to Yuma good. Bale did nothing of note.

It doesn't seem that he comes off as that impressive because the character himself is a pretty weak one. However, the times when the character really shines is when they're having dinner at Dan's house and the hotel in the finale. Bale pulls these moments pretty well. |

I think Russell Crowe's character was weak and his interpretation brought in the "Western cheesyness" that I talked about in the other thread. It was Crowe's nonsensical 180 character arc that made the movie's ending kinda ridiculous. But that's more plot -- the point is, Bale's character was much more subtle but Bale was spot on.
